Getting More Active With The May 24th Weekend

Ahhh…yes, the May 24th weekend which never seems to actually be on May 24th. This marks the unofficial beginning of summer: outdoor fun, yard work, boating, barbecuing, hobbies, suntanning and generally more activity. Gone is the excuse that the weather prevents you from walking or doing your favourite outdoor activity. The concern here is to be careful not to overdo it. If you decide to start walking for example, be sure to only go for a short walk the first few times. 15 to 30 minutes should be enough for most. Also check how stiff you are. Can you touch your toes or merely wave at them? Can you turn your head a full 90 degrees left and right? Can you touch your backside with your heel? These are standard flexibility measures that some people can never attain, but if you can then maybe you don’t need to do any stretches.
Remember, start your activity gradually, do some stretches (if you need to) and be sure to get enough rest, eat well, and drink plenty of water. If you still find yourself getting sore for more than two days straight, you really should see your Chiropractor. There may be a simple adjustment needed or some muscles that need releasing. Either way, we can find what muscles to focus your stretching and strengthening on.
If you let the summer come and you still aren’t active, you will really start to rust out. We all need to be active to be well. Find what activities you enjoy most and make a point of sticking to them. You will be glad you did when you are 90 years old and still enjoying your daily walks. Have a safe and happy Victoria Day long weekend from all of us at Matheson Chiropractic.
