It’s time for all of us to start moving more, again, in the great outdoors. Hopefully we’ve been moving all winter either by going to the gym, skiing, or working out at home. I cannot tell you how often I hear ‘I’m not nearly as active in the winter as I should be.’ This would be fine except that we should expect winter to come around every year and realize it’s not healthy for us to skip exercise for those 3 or 4 months. Maybe decide now if you haven’t been active, what will you do next winter to continue to be more active?
Spring is coming fast and now is the time to start stretching more, maybe walk around your house, or, go up and down the stairs more. Anything that works your muscles, gets your heart pumping more, and makes you more physically fit. Want to be able to play baseball or more golf this year without getting sore? Then you should certainly start moving more and working on your core strength as well. Walking is one of the easiest, best things you can do for overall fitness, but also for back strengthening. Try to find those not-so-cold days with no ice on the ground and get outside to walk, hike or ski. Walking sticks are also great for the upper arm workout and preventing falls along with cleats for your shoes if it’s icy.
Perhaps you could join a gym and hit the treadmill, bike, or do aerobics or aquafit class. Lift weights if you like, play pickle ball, anything that gets you moving and having fun. If you find you are stiff, or a little sore, perhaps a visit to the Chiropractor would be a good place to start. Soon the sun will be shining more, the temperatures will be warmer, and summer will be around the corner.
