Have you ever wondered if there was more you could do for your muscle and joint pain at home if you only had the right instructions? Sure, you could go for a treatment with your Chiropractor, RMT, or physiotherapist, but is there anything you can do at home? The answer is yes, usually. At our office we always look for ways a problem can be helped at home. It might be a muscle that can be massaged, or a stretch you can do or just knowing you need to get up off the couch more often. There is no incentive for us to make you do these things except that it might help you.
When you show up at Matheson Chiropractic for an adjustment, we always search for where the pain is, what is causing it, and know what needs to be released to help it. Chiropractors look for areas that are stiff, be it muscle or joint. It’s not simply a matter of straightening out your back. When you strain your spine or limb, you cause some damage. This usually results in muscle or joint tension or tightness and chiropractic adjustments and/or muscle release techniques can help. Sometimes joint and muscle tension can cause nerve tension, often referred to as pinching on the nerve. When this happens, it can be a very serious, painful situation and you may need help from a Chiropractor to start unravelling this tension.
Once the acute, painful phase is over, many of these muscles and joints can be helped at home with regular exercises and sometimes a focus on releasing muscle tension by pressure, stripping, percussion, and sometimes heat/ice. For joints that have become chronically tight, you should be doing some daily stretches in very specific ways to help. Then you can continue to help at home with a routine of releasing joints and muscles, and later start rebuilding with strengthening exercises specific to your condition.
