Thanksgiving Bloating
Bloating comes when there is a buildup of gas in the abdomen. Here are a few of the causes:
- Swallowing too much air, eating or drinking too quickly
- Certain good foods cause more gas when they are digested, like cabbage, broccoli, and beans.
- Intolerances to foods like gluten or lactose can cause gas.
- Slow digestion – as we age our system may slow down and we need to eat slower.
- IBS – Irritable Bowel syndrome – As the name implies, your system is easily irritated and you need to be careful what, when, or how much you eat.
- SIBO – Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth – some people have an imbalance and too much bacteria in their small intestine causing gas, constipation and diarrhea.
The solution: Keep a diary of what you eat and cut down on the likely culprits – beans, carbonated beverages, cruciferous veggies, high fructose fruits, and foods with artificial sweeteners.
Also, practice Mindful Eating. Slow down, beware of each bite and chew thoroughly. Eat your food from a plate, with no screen to stare at, and sitting down.
Those who take a short stroll after eating report less bloating.
