Thanksgiving Bloating

Thanksgiving Bloating

Bloating comes when there is a buildup of gas in the abdomen. Here are a few of the causes:

  1. Swallowing too much air, eating or drinking too quickly
  2. Certain good foods cause more gas when they are digested, like cabbage, broccoli, and beans.
  3. Intolerances to foods like gluten or lactose can cause gas.
  4. Slow digestion – as we age our system may slow down and we need to eat slower.
  5. IBS – Irritable Bowel syndrome – As the name implies, your system is easily irritated and you need to be careful what, when, or how much you eat.
  6. SIBO – Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth – some people have an imbalance and too much bacteria in their small intestine causing gas, constipation and diarrhea.

The solution: Keep a diary of what you eat and cut down on the likely culprits – beans, carbonated beverages, cruciferous veggies, high fructose fruits, and foods with artificial sweeteners.

Also, practice Mindful Eating. Slow down, beware of each bite and chew thoroughly. Eat your food from a plate, with no screen to stare at, and sitting down.

Those who take a short stroll after eating report less bloating.
