Hands-on Chiropractic Adjustments Explained

Chiropractors have been adjusting spines and other joints by hand for over 130 years. Techniques have improved, but the basic notion that vertebrae become restricted from some type of trauma and begin to irritate nerves, has never changed. Now the most reasonable treatment for this restricted joint is something that helps it restore normal mobility, easily and gently. That is exactly what hands-on adjustments do. We palpate the spine for mobility. Whenever we find an area that is stuck or stiffer than normal, hands-on adjustments can help.

Some alternate treatments are available to reduce pain and swelling, relax the muscles, or numb the nerve. These can help too, but if the vertebrae are stuck, or restricted, hands-on adjusting is the best way to restore normal movement and help the area heal.

Some practitioners will do slow mobilizing of stiff joints, or use an instrument, and this has some value as well. Still the quick, gentle, short thrust of a good Chiropractic, hands-on adjustment is usually the best.

We always assess the whole spine to find the stiff areas that are related to a person’s pain. Sometimes there are unrelated stiff areas, but we may do some correction there, before it causes another issue.

So, after a thorough consultation to determine the full extent of your problem, we perform an exhaustive examination to determine what areas are affected and what can be done, naturally, to help. We may need to see x-rays, especially if there has been an injury.

After explaining what area is causing the trouble, we set out a general approach of care to correct the vertebral movement and if needed, release the muscles nearby, as well. This treatment session may need to be performed several times for the most complete relief, but often some relief is seen after only a visit, or two. We always follow up with home care like using ice, or heat, avoiding prolonged sitting, prescribing stretches, and release techniques of the affected muscles.

There may be other things that can help your back problem, but if your joints are stiff and irritating the nerves, hands-on adjustments may be your best option. It also makes good sense to start with something that is natural before resorting to a lot of drugs.
